Late interest from East Bengal stalls papers for Panagiotis Delimberis as Mohun Bagan SG coach

Late drama gripped Kolkata football circles as Mohun Bagan Super Giants coach Panagiotis Delimberis’ paperwork came to a halt in the evening, following recent interest from East Bengal.

Delemberis, as of noon on June 16, has parted ways with FC Punjab, after informing the club that he has verbally agreed to join Bagan as head coach for the upcoming Indian Super League (ISL) season.

However, with the paperwork still awaited, the Red and Gold Brigade, now ISL champions, have reached out to the Greek tactician to see if he is still open to changing his mind.

East Bengal won their maiden ISL title and their first men’s top flight title in 22 years after defeating Inter Kashi in the final round of last season. His coach, Oscar Brozon, had said before the final match that the confrontation against Kashi would be his last match, but he expressed his interest in continuing, provided that the club presented him with a better offer, in terms of planning.

This is not the first time that the two teams have competed to sign a player or coach.

Previously, Lalengmawaya “My father” Mumbai City FC’s Ralte and Punjab’s Abhishek Singh Teksham were involved in a bidding war, which eventually saw the Mariners field the two in their dressing room.

However, regarding Dilmperis, both clubs remain tight-lipped at the moment.

However, time seems scarce for both teams as the 2026-27 season is scheduled to begin on July 25, about a month from now.
