Former Pakistani star mocks Aqib Javed amid controversy over his selection and says make him a “non-playing captain”

Former Pakistan all-rounder Rashid Khan has sarcastically advised the Pakistan Cricket Board to make senior selector Aqib Javed the non-playing captain for all formats. Rashid made the comment on a podcast after Aqib publicly criticized the team’s captain, coaches and recent player selections. “Since Aqib seems to know more about Pakistani cricket, I don’t see any reason why he can’t be the non-playing captain,” Rashid quipped in a podcast on Hamariweb.com. He was responding to recent comments made by Aqib on why the board decided to replace seven England players and also to the former seamer’s criticism of the head coach, bowling coach and captain when selecting the team for the Tests in England.
Aaqib tried to justify the drastic changes in the Pakistan touring squad by blaming the team management.
PCB president Mohsin Naqvi said the changes were necessary due to poor performance and other issues within the touring team.
Rashid played Test cricket for Pakistan and was part of the 1983 World Cup squad.
Rasheed said: “He gives the impression that he knows everything, and now that he is openly interfering in the work of the coach and captain, just give him complete control over the team.”
Rashid expressed his anguish over the current scenario in Pakistan cricket and said that people like Aqib and others are clinging to their jobs and have no idea how to do the right things for Pakistan cricket.
Rashid asked: “Aqib is now criticizing the team’s management, and he has interfered in the team’s affairs before as well, so why don’t we make him a permanent leader who does not play like they do in tennis?”
“At least then he won’t be able to blame anyone for a bad performance.” Rasheed said the club president said critics should not dampen players’ morale, yet he himself approved a decision where seven players, including seniors, were asked to return home midway through the tour.
He asked, “Does the PCB Chairman believe that these actions will raise the morale of the players?”
