‘Run a marathon, build a company’: New York CEO says Indian grandmother still upset because she’s not married

A New York-based executive caught social media attention after revealing that her grandmother in India was upset about her unmarried status, despite running a multi-million dollar company that thrives in one of the world’s best cities. In a video clip that went viral on Instagram, the user named Hemakshi Motka explained that the problem appeared during an event in India. Her grandmother felt sad that only “married girls” received traditional gifts of blankets.

Because Mutka was unmarried, Grandma couldn’t gather up the blanket and vent her frustration, which the New York executive found rather amusing.

“My grandmother is sad because she went to an event where they were distributing blankets to all the married girls in the town, and she couldn’t collect one because I’m not married,” Motka said.

“Here I am, literally running a multi-million dollar company in New York City. I’ve run a freaking marathon, 42 kilometers. And yet, I’ve lost all of those accomplishments to a festive blanket,” she added.

Although the incident highlighted grandmother’s love for Mutka, it also served as a passage for her to warn women against sacrificing their personal identity within marriage.

“As I laughed, it made me think. As women, we are often taught to celebrate the moments when we are chosen. A proposal, a wedding, approval. But your magic is about choosing yourself. It’s the confidence to build a career, take risks, make your own money, and create a life you’re proud of,” Mutka captioned the accompanying video.

“Because nicknames and other people’s opinions can change. Your relationship with yourself is forever. A blanket is nice. But confidence travels with you everywhere. Wear your mojo.”

Reactions on social media

As the post gained momentum, social media users also joined in on the funny incident. One user said: “Funding a blanket distribution party for unmarried girls is a game changer,” while another added: “

A third commented: “Although I don’t blame your grandmother, she belongs to a completely different time and generation… I applaud you for doing the things you want, your way.”

A fourth said: “This is your grandmother’s way of motivating you to get married before the next event so you can get a free Duplo.”
