Why are footballers wearing pink shoes in the 2026 World Cup?

Until a few years ago, football boots tended largely to shades of black, or perhaps white and blue. But now, brands have started using all kinds of bright colors to stand out. In the 2026 World Cup, things have completely changed. Instead of trying to look different, almost every player on the field wears the same light pink.

The main reason for this trend is that the biggest sports brands – Nike, Adidas and Puma – have all made very similar pink shoes for this tournament. This became evident during the opening match between Mexico and South Africa, where almost every player on the pitch was wearing neon pink. It seems that the brands have completely agreed on the same approach.

This did not happen by chance. Big brands usually plan their designs two years in advance and look at global fashion data. In 2024, a major trend forecasting company called WGSN predicted that a bright neon pink called “Electric Fuchsia” would be the biggest color of summer 2026. Sports brands followed this data to make sure their products looked current.

Another big reason to use pink is pure marketing and visibility. As users on Reddit point out, pink is the color that shows up most in a green grass field. It makes players highly visible whether you’re watching a live stream on the field, watching on TV, or scrolling through quick clips on your phone.

There’s also a psychological reason behind flashy shoes. According to a New York Times report, Odinga Nyamako of Nike’s soccer cleats team explained that players are actually requesting loud colors. Nimako stated that athletes feel more confident during huge tournament moments when they wear bright colors that stand out.

However, since Nike, Adidas and Puma all had the same idea at the same time, it created a funny coincidence. Each brand chose pink because they thought it would help them stand out from their competitors. Instead, since almost everyone is wearing the exact same color, they all look the same on the grass!
