A specialized database has recorded a major expansion of Microsoft’s physical disc-to-digital conversion program, codenamed Positron. The system currently supports over 800 different games released on optical media. The program allows owners of original physical copies to insert a disc into their Xbox One or Xbox Series X console and permanently lock the digital license to their account. Meanwhile, over 200 compatible titles have now been completely removed from official digital stores, making this technology an important step in preserving the world’s gaming heritage.
Obtaining digital rights through the Positron system gives users access to the Xbox Play Anywhere ecosystem, allowing them to run the acquired versions on personal computers running Windows, portable devices, and the Xbox Cloud Gaming service. Media tracking ensures the protection of copyright holders when transferring a disc to another person. If the owner sells or transfers a physical disc, the digital license is automatically detached from their profile and transferred to the new buyer after the disc is reauthorized in the console’s drive.
The functionality is currently available exclusively to Xbox Insiders in the Alpha and Alpha-Skip Ahead benchmark branches, with a full public release expected in October 2026. The list of supported projects already includes hundreds of releases from leading publishers, including the Battlefield franchise, Call of Duty, Resident Evil, and The Witcher. However, several major publishing houses, including Square Enix, Sega, Bandai Namco, and Ubisoft, are currently holding off on participating in the program until legal approvals are finalized.
