‘Serve like Sachin Tendulkar’: BCCI sends big message to Vaibhav Suryavanshi after review meeting

Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Devajit Saikia on Thursday said the board wants young batting star Vaibhav Suryavanshi and other emerging prospects to build a long and successful career like legendary Indian batsman Sachin Tendulkar, while providing the right guidance and support to the 15-year-old to ensure he does not become a “one series or one-year wonder”. The BCCI held a review meeting on Thursday, attended by secretary Devajit Saikia, India Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill, T20I captain Shreyas Iyer, head coach Gautam Gambhir, Center of Excellence (CoE) chief VVS Laxman and other senior BCCI officials at the board headquarters in Mumbai.

Among other matters discussed at the meeting, Saikia said the BCCI is closely monitoring Sooryavanshi and other young prospects, with the board focusing on providing them with proper guidance and support to help them build a long and successful international career.

“As you can see, BCCI can be proud that we are promoting a 15-year-old player who has already made his mark on the international scenario and we are very careful to take every right step forward so that it is not a one-series or a one-year wonder. We want Vaibhav Suryavanshi or any player of his stature to continue and serve as Sachin Tendulkar has done for the country or other players who have in the past become legends, so we are looking at Vaibhav in a very serious way. It has been done,” Saikia said. “Watching him from every angle and every step he takes forward in his international career, BCCI is taking a hard look at his future.”

At just 15 years of age, Sooryavanshi has enjoyed a remarkable cricketing career. Recently, at just 15 years and 157 days, he became the youngest player to score a half-century in the history of the Duleep Trophy, breaking a record of 57 years.

He also scored 151 runs in three matches against Zimbabwe to earn the Player of the Series award as India completed a 3-0 sweep.

Earlier, in the T20I series against England, Sooryavanshi became India’s youngest ever player to get a maiden ODI. His India debut came on the back of an impressive campaign in IPL 2026 with Rajasthan Royals, where he amassed 776 runs at an impressive strike rate of 237.30, including a century and five fifties. His explosive season saw him finish as the tournament’s top scorer while smashing a record 72 sixes.

The youngster also received several post-season awards, including the Orange Cap Award, Most Valuable Player Award, Emerging Player Award, Super Striker Award, and Super Sixes Award. He also had an impressive campaign in the ICC Under-19 Men’s Cricket World Cup earlier this year, where he amassed 439 runs and was named Player of the Tournament, further highlighting his immense potential.
