Inside Aditi Rao Hydari and Siddharth’s deeply storied first home in Chennai

The plan gives that quality a physical form. A long corridor forms the spine of the apartment, with the living and dining spaces, kitchen, den and a bedroom on one side, while a central foyer on the other leads towards the TV room, a lounge and two more bedrooms. The spaces are distinct in character—their colours and patterns changing as you move through them— yet they belong unmistakably together.
This is what AD100 designer Pavitra Rajaram has made of the house Aditi and Siddharth purchased. Originally designed by architect Sruthi C Reddy, the apartment already had strong bones and a sensibility the couple liked. For both, it was a first: their first home together, and the first home either had owned. To bring more of themselves into it, they turned to the Chennai born, Mumbai-based Rajaram to shape it around their lives. Now, one sees Rajaram’s hand everywhere, from the wallpapers and furniture to the textiles, upholstery and even the final arrangement of objects and décor. Yet, the home is not the designer’s signature. “I tend to like blues and aquas, but here, Aditi’s influence nudged the palette somewhere warmer: towards earthy, mulchy tones, and I leaned into it rather happily,” she says. “Liking the same things created a real connection between us.” One bedroom is bathed in blue, another immersed in green; the dining room is wrapped in pink, the TV room takes on yellow, and the lounge settles into dusty rose.
