Samsung’s latest foldable phones, particularly the wider Galaxy Z Fold 8have been selling well since their launch last month, and new research may help explain why. According to a Samsung-commissioned survey, 85% of smartphone users feel the need for a larger screen at some point. Many of them reportedly leave tasks unfinished on their phones and complete them on a device with a bigger display.
Galaxy Z Fold8 offers a bigger screen without a bigger phone
Samsung’s research found that 69% of European smartphone users want the flexibility of a slim phone that can transform into a larger-screen device. That’s essentially the experience the Galaxy Z Fold 8 provides. It unfolds to a 7.6-inch canvas that’s more suitable for reading documents, comparing information, multitasking, watching videos, and browsing the web than a regular smartphone screen.
And there are already signs that consumers are responding. Samsung says the new Galaxy Z series achieved its best-ever foldable pre-orders in Europe. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 accounted for more than 40% of the series’ pre-orders in the region. The devices have also sold well in many other markets, with the wide model’s share topping 60% in some of them.

In fact, the Fold 8 has proven to be so popular that Samsung is reportedly considering two variants for 2027. It’s still unclear how the company would differentiate them, but there are several areas where it could improve on the current model. The cameras are arguably the biggest disappointment, so a more premium variant with flagship-grade cameras could make sense.
We’ve already seen people say they’re skipping the regular Fold 8 and opting for the Fold 8 Ultra specifically for its cameras. Adding S Pen support could also help enhance the device’s appeal. Whether Samsung actually addresses these shortcomings with next year’s models remains to be seen.
