Australia News – Marnus Labuschagne dropped from ODI squad; Joel Davies, including Ollie Beck

Labuschagne struggled during the tours of Pakistan and Bangladesh in June before scoring an unbeaten 55 in the second match after being at the bottom of the standings. However, with Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh returning to the ODI squad, and the faith of the selectors in some of the younger generations, he has been left out. The Test squad for the South Africa series will be named next week.

News Corp It was reported on Tuesday that Labuschagne’s Test venue was safe and while chief selector George Bailey said the team was still being prepared, he added that decisions across formats had been made independently. “We’re still working a lot on what the Test team looks like, but I can tell [we] “Separate these formats,” Bailey told reporters.

Marsh will captain the side in Zimbabwe while he and Cummins will share the role in South Africa depending on how many matches the latter plays.

Meanwhile, Stanlake was part of the ODI squad for the tour of Pakistan and made his international debut in over seven years when he played in Rawalpindi although he went wicketless in his only appearance in the series.

While the three matches in South Africa will, in part, serve as preparation for the Test series for the all-rounders, the Australian selectors are looking at the ODIs as a key part of the planning for next year’s World Cup which will be held in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.

“This six-match series serves as an important introduction for the group into next year’s World Cup finals, which will be played in the same countries,” Bailey said. “As such, it’s great to have Mitch [Marsh]Travis and Josh return, then Pat and Mitch [Starc] to [South Africa] man. This gives us a core group of players mixed in with some who we believe will continue to make a good impression.

“For Ollie and Joel, who we rate very highly, it is another fantastic opportunity and another chance for them to continue their exposure and growth in the Australian team.”

The selectors have resisted the temptation to mix and match the ODI and Australia A teams who will be in India at the same time after previously flagging the possibility of some players getting red-ball opportunities in India with an eye on next year’s Test series.

“It’s always a difficult issue,” Bailey said. “I guess [we] I’ve touched on this in the past that it’s opportunity versus not wanting to take away the opportunity to play those first-class games versus not wanting to take away the opportunity to play international cricket.

“I think the three obvious ones in this boat… Cooper, Ole and then Joel Davies as well, I’ll throw them in that boat. We’ve discussed even after the South African one-day players whether there’s value in them going through the white ball and continuing to play more white-ball cricket in those one-day matches.” [in India]. But I think where we are, all three have had really good exposure to the subcontinent recently and had multiple appearances there.”

Johnson is the only player who will head to India after being included in the white-ball portion of Tour A with the three-day one-day stay following the conclusion of the ODI series in South Africa.

Zimbabwe’s ODI matches will be held on September 15, 18 and 20 in Harare. The South African Championship will be held on September 24, 27 and 30 in Durban, Johannesburg and Potchefstroom respectively.
