What was notable about Shanaka’s century was not only that he scored an unbeaten 121 off 43 balls to help the Patriots post 235, but that he only came out to bat in the 10th over, when they were 89 for 2.
The Kings had nothing in their favor after winning the toss as they started by dropping Kyle Mayers on the second ball of the match before that.

Shanaka began his attack with successive leg-side sixes off Roston Chase before chasing down Ford. He was not deterred by the wickets of Fletcher and Jason Holder in successive overs as he belted sixes from Chase and Keon Gaston to bring up half-centuries off 24 balls and then crossed the boundary with 6, 6 and 4 from compatriot Thekshana – as
Wanendu Hasaranga I watched from the other end – for 20 run over.
He saved the best for last, smashing Gaston for four more sixes and a four in the last over, which amounted to 28, to help the Patriots amass 93 in the last five overs. That ended Kings’ ordeal with the ball but only after Shanaka and Hasaranga had combined for 93 off just 31 balls, with Shanaka hitting eight fours and 12 sixes.
The Kings’ chase, which lasted just 13.5 plays, never came close to matching the Patriots’ innings.
Kamil Pooran was fell for a duck in the first over before Hasaranga rattled the stumps twice to leave Kings reeling at 55 for 4.
