Star wicket-keeper-batsman Prabhisimran Singh was part of India’s squad for the T20I series against Zimbabwe in July 2026, but did not get a chance to play in any of the three matches for the Shreyas Iyer-led team. He was expected to get his chance in the three-match T20I series against Afghanistan in New Delhi next week, but the right-handed wicket-keeper batsman has been left out of the squad.
In his place, Sanju Samson returned to the Indian T20I squad on Tuesday (September 1) and is likely to be the second-choice wicket-keeper-batsman behind Ishan Kishan, who currently tops the ICC T20I batting rankings.
Prabhsimran’s exclusion from the team was not surprising, considering that he trails Samson and Ishan in the pecking order. However, the young wicketkeeper-batsman, who represents Punjab Kings in the Indian Premier League, responded to his omission from the Indian team by scoring a brilliant unbeaten century.
Just hours after India’s squad for the Afghanistan series was announced, Prabhsimran took the field for Jalandhar Warriors in the Sher-E-Punjab T20 League match against Amritsar Surmas and smashed 125 runs off just 47 balls.
During his stay at the Punjab Cricket Association IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali, the 26-year-old smashed 14 fours and eight sixes to help his side chase down a target of 264 runs in just 16.2 overs for the loss of just two wickets.
Prabhsimran needed just 41 balls to complete his century in the record chase. He reached the three-figure mark by hitting Amritsar Surmas captain Abhishek Sharma with a six off the sixth ball in the 14th over.
Abhishek, who failed to impress with his batting in the Zimbabwe series, has retained his place in India’s T20I squad. However, he will face stiff competition from Samson for a spot as Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s opening partner.
Prabhsimran, who holds the record for scoring the most runs in IPL by an uncapped player, leads Jalandhar Warriors in Sher-E-Punjab T20 League 2026. In his team’s first match in the tournament, he scored 76 runs off 42 balls as an opening batsman.
Prabhsimran, who was part of the Indian team that won gold at the 2023 Asian Games, will next play for Jalandhar Warriors on Thursday afternoon (September 3) against Bhatinda Royals.
