WWE SmackDown RESULTS AND LIVE BLOG FOR AUG. 14
Born into attitude, asleep at the wheel. Throw all your bullets in the fire and run like hell, but me? I’m just here to liveblog this pro wrestling show for you, folks.
The show opens with a flyby of the arena and then into our usual montage of talent arriving at the arena.
General manager Nick Aldis is in the ring and gets on the mic.
He says as many of us know, Chelsea Green suffered a broken orbital bone last week and after speaking with medical he’s reached a decision on what to do and he invites our WWE Women’s Champion to the ring.
She makes her entrance with, understandably, a grody black eye.
Aldis says there’s no easy way to say this, he knows how hard she’s worked and how much the title means to her, but he spoke to medical and he can’t let her in good conscience compete with a broken eye socket. Green begs him, saying she’ll do whatever it takes and it’s already healing up.
Nick says he hates this part of his job, but it is his job, and he’s so sorry, but he needs her to relinquish the WWE Women’s Championship. “No!” chants go up and Chelsea says she knew it was too good to be true and she’s been waiting for the other shoe to drop, because every time something good and magical happens to her in this business, it’s followed by something devastating, and that’s just her story, isn’t it?
Chelsea Green, the comic relief, the perfect opponent for the other girls, never the champion, never QB1. “You deserve it!” chants go up and she talks about what she’s sacrificed to be here, missing weddings and funerals, breaking bones, leaving all her blood, sweat, and tears in the ring. She puts her face through cakes and pies, puts her body in dumpsters, has the entire world laugh in her face, but every night she tells herself it’s worth it because this moment would come.
And now here we are, she made it, and Aldis should understand that, especially after SummerSlam. He says that’s not the same, she says it’s exactly the same, the entire world saw him in the ring with his family, and then she went out there and proved it doesn’t matter what they think, it matters what we think!
Nick was a champion, his wife was a champion, and until someone takes this off of her, it’s hers. She shoves the title in his chest and says she thought he of all people would understand as she leaves the ring.
Aldis tells her to wait and says as Nick Aldis the GM he thinks he’s doing the right thing, but as Nick Aldis the man, he doesn’t give a damn what medical says! Chelsea comes back to the ring and Nick says she has thirty days to get cleared, get a face mask, do whatever she has to do to defend the title, but until someone takes it from her, it’s hers!
She hugs Nick and takes the titl back and raises it high!
He gets on the mic in the aisle and calls Chelsea another sob story and says he wants to put attention on important things here. He says he knows Hunter has Nick on a short leash and asks why he pulled that stunt on him at SummerSlam. Aldis says now isn’t the time or place and he’ll be happy to discuss it in his office later, like men, and right now it’s about the Women’s Championship.
GUNTHER mocks Chelsea as just climbing a ladder and then bumping into a doorframe while he did double duty both nights of SummerSlam and made a man tap out in front of his family. He turns back to Aldis and asks why he added Kevin Owens to his match. Nick says he didn’t do it that way, he added GUNTHER to Kevin Owens’ match.
They’ve been negotiating KO’s return for months, it was GUNTHER who was a last-minute addition to the match, and he didn’t do the job, did he? Green laughts at him and the Ring General tells her to shut up. She tells him to go puff his chest at a woman, have his temper tantrum, stroke that fragile little male ego, that’s all you have left after SummerSlam, isn’t it?
She only sees one champion in this ring, herself.
Matt Cardona rushes to the ring and slides in and gets between Green and GUNTHER!
The Ring General mocks him for coming from catering to the rescue, and there’s nothing he can do to him anyway. He could call his girl every slur in the world right now and there’s nothing Cardona will do to him. Chelsea asks Matt to back down and GUNTHER calls him a dog listening to his master and THAT’s enough for Cardona to break free and attack the Ring General!
Referees swarm to keep them apart and we go to break.
Back from commercial, match joined in progress, and GUNTHER is in control. Cardona manages to trap him in the corner for some punches but a chop cuts him down! Laying chops in, Matt ducks on, returns elbows in the corner, choking the Ring General with a knee! GUNTHER bails to avoid the Broski Boot but a wrecking ball dropkick connects!
GUNTHER chops him against the timekeeper’s barricade, back suplex into the barricade… POWERBOMB INTO THE ANNOUNCE DESK! POWERBOMB INTO THE APRON! Chelsea Green shouting at the Ring General from ringside as he climbs back in, happy to take referee Dan Engler’s ten count. Green shouting at Cardona to get up, he beats the count!
Ripcord lariat from GUNTHER, mocking Chelsea, she says he wouldn’t know what love is if it bit him and he hits a back suplex! Taking his time, toying with Matt, screwing with Green, she gets up on the apron, Engler talks her down and Cardona kicks GUNTHER low to take advantage, Rough Ryder… SO CLOSE!
Another Rough Ryder countered into a powerbomb, the Ring General picks him back up, another powerbomb and then he turns Matt over into a Boston Crab… IT’S OVER!
GUNTHER wins by submission with a Boston Crab.
Post-match, Lash Legend and Nia Jax come to the stage.
Jax gets on the mic and says not even a week into her title reign and Chelsea’s injured? Pathetic. Now she’s got a ticking clock and since she wants to be a fighting champion, why waste time? Nia says she got screwed out of SummerSlam, and you know what she wants? The WWE Women’s Championship.
They get in the ring and Jax says if she doesn’t get what she wants, well she has a history of breaking faces around here–
TIFFANY STRATTON MAKES THE SAVE! Throwing wild elbows on both Forces, but Legend gets her in the bear hug and That Damn Numbers Game wins out. Nia drops a leg on her as referees appear to try and calm things down and the Irresistible Forces back down and leave.
We get a recap of Alexa Bliss bringing Tatum Paxley to SmackDown help Charlotte Flair to beat Jade Cargill last week.
Charlotte Flair and Alexa Bliss are walking and hugging backstage.
Flair thanks Bliss for helping her out last week, Alexa gives Tatum Paxley the credit and thanks Charlotte for being okay with her. Flair says it was a one-time thing, but Bliss says she better be okay going forward because Paxley reminds her of her and Charlotte loves her, right? And futher, Flair better be nice about the gift that Tatum has for them.
A door opens and Tatum Paxley is standing in a… shrine… full of candles and pictures of Charlotte. Bliss climbs in and awkwardly says this brings her back, and Flair climbs in even more awkwardly as the door shuts.
Back from commercial, we get a recap of the Cody Rhodes/Randy Orton segment from last week.
Backstage, Cody Rhodes meets with Nick Aldis and asks to get the match on paper now.
Aldis says he hasn’t seen Randy Orton but Saturday Sunday Night’s Main Event is coming up, how about having the match then? Rhodes says whenever and wherever is fine for him, just get it done.
Sami Zayn rolls up, sour that all Cody has to do is ask and mountains are moved, but if he wants his rematch he has to earn it in a #1 contender’s match, which becomes a three-way, which becomes a four-way, which he lost, and wrestled with a broken hand. Rhodes says Sami used to be able to come up to him and filibuster him like this maybe because of his friendship but he doesn’t have to put up with this for anybody anymore.
So, Sami, with your carpal tunnel gout fist, you wanna do something about, let’s do something about it. Zayn runs off a list of everybody else that couldn’t beat Cody but says he did, clean, in the middle of the ring, for the title. Rhodes wants a match tonight, Sami says he WOULD pick a night he was hurt and can’t, and Cody walks off.
Nick asks “can’t” or “won’t” and offers to sweeten the pot– if Sami wrestles Cody tonight, and beats him, he’ll get a title match against the winner of CM Punk vs. Kevin Owens. He leaves Zayn sputtering to think about it.
Carmelo Hayes makes his entrance ahead of our next match and we go to break.
Back from commercial, Baron Corbin makes his entrance riding in on his motorcycle like a bootleg Rob Halford.
Baron Corbin (c) vs. Carmelo Hayes (WWE Men’s United States Championship)
Hayes dives on Corbin before he gets in the ring! Baron scrambles inside and we get a bell! Dropkick from Carmelo, right hands in the corner, Corbin throws him into the next corner, Hayes ducks a shot and lays chops in! Mounted punches follow, Baron shoves him away, enzuigiri from Melo says up a springboard corkscrew uppercut for a nearfall!
Up top, Corbin catches Hayes in a goozle, float over, low-bridge sends the champion to the floor! Kicks in the ropes, Fade Away turns into more of a seated senton than a leg drop but Melo is fired up all the same! Codebreaker countered into a powerbomb, roll through and Baron boots him to the floor!
Out after Hayes, throwing him over the timekeeper’s barricade, back inside and Corbin is happy to take the countout as we go to break!
Back from commercial, Corbin is in control but Hayes manages to fight free with some elbows. Whip blocked, big lariat from Baron! Scooping Carmelo up on his shoulder, but he slips out, sidestep the charge, kick the knee, kick the dome, springboard back elbow, cover for two! Frog splash… CORBIN KICKS OUT!
Codebreaker countered again, big boot sends Hayes ass over teakettle, powerbomb countered to a rolling sunset flip… NOPE! Knee to the face gets Deep Six… MELO KICKS OUT! Float over, Codebreaker connects this time, another Codebreaker, up top but Baron sends him crashing to the floor!
Back inside, short-arm…
Baron Corbin wins by pinfall with the short-arm End of Days.
Post-match, Trick Williams makes his entrance… AND DISTRACTS CORBIN SO LIL YACHTY CAN ATTACK HIM FROM BEHIND WITH THE TRICK STICK!
Baron shrugs it off and takes it and swings it, Yachty bails and Trick slides in and hits Trick Shot to send Corbin packing!
Chelsea Green checks on Tiffany Stratton backstage and offers her gratitude.
Stratton says she’s fine for her match later and Green asks if she’s sure, which Tiffy says she is and we go to break.
Back from commercial, Kevin Owens makes his entrance and gets on the mic, but before he can say anything–
He says he knows Owens is a lot of things but one of them is not a coward, so he figured whatever he had to say tonight, he should say it to his face. But Punk doesn’t give him a chance to start, launching into his “great to be alive on a Friday night” schtick. After a beat CM asks what he’s waiting for and Kev finally starts.
It’s funny, Punk is talking about saying things to faces when last week Punk was on the stage with his back turned when he called him a fat slob, or something similar. CM asks if he really thinks he wouldn’t say that to his face, and Owens says people don’t realize their story actually starts twenty years ago.
Punk tells him to go ahead and smarten ‘em up, and Owens says twenty years ago they wrestled for the same independent promotion and CM was a big top guy and KO was just trying to make a name for himself. And on that night, in all the ways he could have done, Punk chose to berate him and scream at him in a locker room full of his peers.
CM asks if that’s what he’s been holding on to for twenty years and Kev says that’s not all of it, it’s also the person he’s been, the things he’s said, the way he’s treated good friends of his… Punk asks him to be more specific, and Owens says he might think he’s only talking about three of them but all of his friends hate him.
Punk says being hated by losers is the price he pays to not be a loser himself, and KO says that’s part of why he despises him. He sees a locker room full of people that look up to him, he’s made his amends and everything’s okay, there’s only one guy left who doesn’t like him and that’s Owens, and he’ll never like him.
Everything CM does is performative, he’s a phony, and the only reason he came back and made everything right is because he had no choice, because the kind of person he is lead him to screw things up everywhere else he went, and he doesn’t respect people like Punk. But in the meantime he’s won championships, he got to main event WrestleMania against Steve Austin!
Punk congratulates him and says he was happy for him them and he’s happy for him now but does he really believe he would have been afforded those opportunities if he was still here? Owens tells him to stand here and say why he thinks he wouldn’t have gotten those opportunities, what is it, he’s a fat indie slob, a fan on the other side of the guardrail? Just say it!
CM asks if he thinks that’s what he thinks or is that what he thinks about himself? But he’s here, he’s champion, he’s got a locker room full of guys who want to be world champion, he calls out Oba Femi and he gets endometriosis instead. He looks at Kevin Owens and he sees a lot of things, and if he wants to listen to him disparage him, it would make light of all the great things he’s achieved in his career.
He looks at Owens and sees a tough guy, he sees a guy who can speak two languages, and that makes him smarter than him, but he sees a guy who avoids the work and that makes him stupid. He sees wasted potential, he’s a tough guy… but he’s a bum. KO avoids the hard work, says Punk is a shapeshifter when the word he should use is evolved.
Punk adapts, he overcomes, he tries to be 1% better every day and maybe if he did half that, Kevin would have avoided the Bill Goldberg spear that ended his last title reign. Owens says he’s spent his whole career trying to be not like Punk and when he looks at CM he sees a guy who goes home and hates himself, but he’s the same person Punk screamed at twenty years ago.
That fat indie loser is in the same ring as him and he’s facing him for the WWE Championship next week, and being like him wouldn’t help, because after all, Punk couldn’t avoid that Roman Reigns spear at WrestleMania.
CM says he looks at KO and sees himself from twenty years ago, stubborn, loud, always thinks he’s the smartest guy in the ring, but he still sees the same guy he saw twenty years ago. Owens asks if that bothers him, that he never cared what he thought, never sought out his advice or guidance. He’s regretted for twenty years not punching him in the mouth in that locker room.
Punk tells him there’s nothing between them but air and opportunity and offers his jaw up. Owens says he didn’t do it then because he knew CM would have ruined his career and that would have been it, and he’s not doing it now because next week in Toronto he doesn’t just get to punch him in the face, he gets to beat his bitch ass for the WWE title after he does it.
CM tells him twenty years ago he was a greenhorn who thought he could speak disrespectfully and he’s been crying about the consequences for twenty years. He wants to wait a week, that’s fine with him. He never looked up to him? That’s also fine, because he’s gonna next week after Punk chokes his ass out.
Finn Balor is chatting with Nick Aldis backstage wearing a jaunty neckerchief.
Balor says he took the week off to get over it but now he understands why Aldis added GUNTHER and Kevin Owens to the match last week.
GUNTHER rolls up and complains about being forced to wrestle street clothes and he wants to sort out the SummerSlam problem. Aldis tells him he’s interrupting another conversation, and the Ring General asks with who. Nick says Finn Balor, and GUNTHER makes a show of acting like he can’t see him but oh wait there’s the shadow of Finn Balor.
Balor says he was about to tell Nick he’ll do whatever it takes to earn another title shot, so if he has to beat GUNTHER’s ass to do it, well he’ll show him who the real Finn Balor is.
Damian Priest & R-Truth make their entrance ahead of our next match and send us to break.
Back from commercial, War Raiders are already in the ring and the Sons of Haku, once again accompanied by Haku, make their entrance to get us going.
Damian Priest & Ron “the Truth” Killings (c) vs. Sons of Haku (Tama & Talla Tonga) vs. War Raiders (Erik & Ivar) (WWE Men’s Tag Team Championship)
Chaotic brawling to start, the tag champs are laid out, the other two teams brawl with each other, Tama to the floor, the Vikings clobber him with double elbows and then brawl on the floor, Priest and Killings lock hands and Damian takes all four of ‘em out with a diving crossbody to the floor and sends us to break!
Back from commercial, Tama working Truth over, Killings passes him to the floor, tag to Priest! Flash kick to Ivar, right hands to Erik, back elbow to Warbeard, jumping kick and then charging elbows on both Vikings! Tag champs get up top with Ivar but Tonga cuts them off and double chokeslams only for Warbeard to take him out with a cannonball off the top!
Erik brawling with the Tongan, whip across, duck a lariat, pop-up powerslam… NO DEAL! Talla in throwing lariats at his fellow challengers, spinning powerslam on Ron and he’s fired up! Haku cheering him from ringside, he turns to face Ivar and Damian and they team up to beat the giant down!
Double suplex on Talla and Truth puts him in the STF! Tonga gets to his knees to block, match breaking down, Erik with the half nelson to sleep, Priest saves his buddy by taking War Raiders out, discus roundhouses to Erik on the floor! Damian fired up… WAR RAIDERS ASSISTED POWERSLAM THROUGH THE TIMEKEEPER’S BARRICADE!
Tama shoves Erik over the announce desk, back inside, Killings with a shoulder block, shoulder block, fall-forward Blue Thunder Driver, “You can’t see me!” and the Five Knuckle Shuffle lands true! Fireman’s carry, Tama slips out and rakes his eyes and throws him into Erik to keep him from coming back in!
Suplexing him into Talla’s grip…
The Sons of Haku win by pinfall with Brother’s Keeper on Ron “the Truth” Killings, becoming your new WWE Men’s Tag Team Champions.
Post-match, Haku and his sons celebrate in the ring.
Fatal Influence are shown walking backstage to send us to break.
Back from commercial, Tiffany Stratton makes her entrance to get us going.
Jacy Jayne vs. Tiffany Stratton (c) (WWE Women’s United States Championship)
Jayne hot out the gates, Stratton manages to roll away from a senton, drop toehold puts her on the second, running hip attack, basement dropkick, cover for two! Lainey Reid runs interference and Jacy takes the opportunity to hit a lungblower and send us to break!
Back from commercial, Chelsea Green is here to check on her pal Tiffy! Off the ropes, both women go for the same thing and end up down and out! Stratton to her feet first, blocking punches and throwing her own back, lariat connects, another one, catch a kick, back elbow, off the ropes, cartwheel into the Alabama Slam and she goes up top for the senton atomico… NO GOOD!
Tiffany counters a kick into a pin for two, handspring Stunner connects, fireman’s carry, Finlay Roll, double jump moonsault… THE KNEES ARE UP BUT STRATTON KICKS OUT OF THE COVER! Fireman’s carry, Fallon Henley runs interference and Chelsea Green neutralizes her! Lainey Reid joins Fallon in circling Chelsea… TIFFANY OFF THE TOP WITH A PLANCHA TO WIPE THEM OUT!
Back inside, Jacy is ready…
Jacy Jayne wins by pinfall with the rolling elbow, becoming your new WWE Women’s United States Champion.
Post-match, Green looks appropriately stunned and reticent.
Jade Cargill and her Baddies are interviewed backstage.
They talk about how they’re gonna give Tatum Paxley a “proper welcome” to their show.
“American Nightmare” Cody Rhodes makes his entrance ahead of our main event, sending us to break.
Back from commercial, Sami Zayn makes his entrance to get us going…
…AND RANDY ORTON ATTACKS RHODES FROM BEHIND BEFORE ZAYN CAN EVEN GET AS FAR AS THE RAMP!
He lays Rhodes out with the hanging DDT! But Cody blocks the RKO! Cross Rhodes countered, Randy throws Rhodes out of the ring and smashes his face into the apron on the floor! ORTON SMASHES CODY’S FACE WITH THE STEEL STEPS!
We see referee Charles Robinson arguing with Sami Zayn on the ramp as if Robinson could possibly have done anything about any of this. Randy leans the steel steps against the announce desk but when he goes in the crowd Cody hits him with somebody’s drink! Brawling deeper into the crowd, Rhodes hits him with a trash can full of garbage!
Ever deeper into the crowd and then back out to ringside, Orton brutally shoves a crew member and then puts Rhodes up on the desk! General manager Nick Aldis is here with road agents Jason Jordan and Shawn Daivari and referees but they’re helpless to stop the Viper as he lays Cody so his feet are on the desk and his body and head are in the crevice of the steel steps!
Randy gets a chair and climbs up… AND CODY KICKS HIM LOW TO SAVE HIMSELF! Rhodes wallops him across the back with the steel chair and then sets him up the same way Orton had him set up, but this time the road agents are able to intervene, take the chair away, and pull Cody away from the fray.
Rhodes rushes back over… BUT WE’RE OUTTA TIME, BABY!
That’s the show, folks.
