For decades, Singapore has had an unusually difficult relationship with a very small insect. Aedes aegypti mosquitoes thrive around people and can spread dengue fever in densely populated neighborhoods, making control an ongoing public health task. In 2016, Singapore tried to do something different. Instead of relying solely on traditional mosquito control measures, officials began releasing male Aedes aegypti mosquitoes that carry the naturally occurring Wolbachia bacteria. Males do not bite, and their purpose is not to increase mosquito populations. Singapore’s experience provides a valuable lesson for public health initiatives elsewhere, showing that even scientifically sound interventions rely heavily on sustained, clear communication to gain public trust and community cooperation in the long term.They are released to interfere with reproduction and help suppress disease-carrying mosquitoes in selected areas. The program would eventually expand, but there was another question to answer: would people accept it?
How Wolbachia bacteria turned male mosquitoes into a tool to combat dengue fever
The idea behind the Wolbachia-Singapore project was fairly simple, even if its implementation was not put into practice.Male Aedes aegypti mosquitoes carrying Wolbachia are released into an area where wild mosquitoes are already present. When these males mate with females that do not carry the same bacterial strain, the resulting eggs do not develop normally. The released males therefore serve as part of a population suppression strategy and not as a new source of biting mosquitoes.Male mosquitoes do not bite humans while Aedes aegypti females are the ones that seek out the blood meals they need to produce eggs.That’s what made this approach particularly interesting in a place where combating dengue requires sustained effort. Singapore has already spent years working to reduce mosquito breeding sites and reduce transmission. The Wolbachia method provided another tool targeting the same mosquito populations.The first editions began in 2016 at selected study sites.
The project wasn’t just about releasing mosquitoes
For a program involving insects that can transmit diseases, audience understanding is as important as technology.The word “mosquito” tends to be immediately associated with bites, annoyance, and infection. Therefore, asking the population to accept the deliberate release of millions of them may raise obvious questions. What exactly was launched? Will mosquitoes bite? Can they reproduce? What will happen to the environment?The Singapore program relied on outreach coupled with fieldwork. Residents of the areas participating in the project need to understand the purpose of released insects and why male mosquitoes are used.According to the study published in PubMed Central entitled “Household level survey to understand factors influencing awareness, attitudes and knowledge towards Wolbachia-Aedes technologyHe reveals that as the program expanded, administrators also had to consider whether existing communications were adequate. This became the subject of a household survey conducted at two Wolbachia project study sites between July 2019 and February 2020. The survey included 500 people.
Awareness does not mean complete understanding
The results provided a fairly clear picture of how the program was received several years after its introduction.About three-quarters of those surveyed (74.8%) said they were aware of the Wolbachia-Singapore project. However, awareness does not necessarily mean that people understand the technology in detail.This distinction emerged in the results. Knowledge of the Wolbachia-Aedes approach was lower than public awareness of the project itself. In other words, many residents knew that Singapore was releasing mosquitoes carrying Wolbachia bacteria, but few necessarily understood how it worked.This gap is important in a program that relies on residents being comfortable with what is happening around their homes. Knowing the name of the project is one thing. Understanding why male mosquitoes release it, what Wolbachia does, and how this method is supposed to suppress Aedes aegypti is another matter. The survey indicated a need for more detailed public information rather than just more propaganda.
Admission varies by age and education
Acceptance of the program was associated with age and education. The survey found that younger participants were more likely to express great acceptance of the Wolbachia project. Higher levels of education were also associated with greater acceptance.This does not mean that older or less educated residents widely rejected the project. The broader finding was that acceptance and trust were high among the population surveyed.Instead, the differences provided clues about where communication could be strengthened. Public health programs rarely reach everyone with exactly the same message in exactly the same way. What one group already understands may need to be explained more carefully to another group.For the Wolbachia project, this was important as the program moved beyond the original study sites.
The biggest gap was between awareness and knowledge
There is a subtle difference between recognizing a public health program and understanding the technology it uses.Someone may know that Wolbachia mosquitoes are being released nearby without knowing that the mosquitoes being released are male, that males do not bite, or that the method is designed to interfere with reproduction.The researchers identified knowledge gaps that could leave room for misunderstanding and misinformation. Their findings therefore supported continued communication as the project expanded to larger areas.The issue was not just convincing people to accept the program. It was giving them enough accurate information to understand what was going on in their neighborhoods.
Why Wolbachia became part of Singapore’s dengue strategy
This technology works through a biological feature of Wolbachia bacteria, a bacteria found naturally in many insect species.Scientists can introduce specific strains of bacteria into Aedes aegypti. In the suppression approach used in Singapore, infected males are released to mate with females in wild populations. When mating involves an incompatible group, the eggs fail to hatch naturally.Repeated releases can therefore reduce the number of viable offspring produced by wild mosquito populations.It’s not a way to make mosquitoes disappear overnight. It works through repeated releases and population dynamics, and exists alongside other forms of mosquito control.This is important in Singapore, where dengue prevention involves several layers of intervention. The Wolbachia approach was developed as a complement to, rather than a replacement for, existing vector control measures.
The experiment expanded beyond the first study sites
What began with selected study areas in 2016 has not remained a small, isolated experiment.Singapore continued to expand the Wolbachia project in Singapore, bringing the method to larger areas as the program developed. With this expansion came a different practical challenge. A trial involving a limited number of living people is one thing; A public health program that covers a larger population requires broader public understanding. It is against this background that the household survey was conducted for the period 2019-2020.By then, the project had been around long enough for residents in some areas to be exposed to it for years. The survey indicated that this longer exposure is associated with increased awareness.This gave public health officials something more useful than just an approval rating. It demonstrated how familiarity, education, and communication relate to the way residents understand the program.
The mosquito control program has also become a public communication exercise
The survey results point to an aspect of mosquito control that can easily be overlooked.Science may be conducted in laboratories and field sites, but the program operates in regular residential settings. People see the mosquito traps, hear about the releases, and live where the intervention is taking place. Their understanding of the business becomes part of how the program works. For this reason, communication cannot stop once the project is submitted.The Singapore survey found high levels of trust and acceptance among people questioned, while identifying areas where understanding could be improved. This combination is important: widespread support does not necessarily mean that all the technical details are understood. As the Wolbachia project expands, the results indicate that communications will need to keep pace with the program itself.
