In April 2025, four private astronauts aboard SpaceX’s Fram 2 spacecraft became the first humans ever to orbit Earth in true polar orbit — a path never taken by NASA, the Soviet Union, or any other government space program in the entire history of human spaceflight.


At 01:46 UTC on April 1, 2025, the Falcon 9 Crew Dragon Resilience launched south from Florida with four private astronauts aboard. The spacecraft entered an orbit tilted approximately 90 degrees to the Earth’s equator.

This engineering made Fram2 the first manned flight to orbit the geographic poles. Satellites have used polar trajectories for decades, but no NASA, Soviet Union, Russian, Chinese or any other government human spaceflight program has been able to put humans on those trajectories.

What does true polar orbit mean?

Orbital inclination measures the angle between the spacecraft’s orbital plane and the Earth’s equator. Zero degrees follows the equator. Ninety degrees pass through both poles.

Government expeditions stopped a short distance from the poles

Before Fram2, the crew tilt record belonged to Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova on the Vostok 6 mission in 1963, at about 65 degrees. Other Soviet and Russian flights used relatively high inclinations, but none reached 90 degrees.

The International Space Station is tilted at an angle of 51.6 degrees. NASA explains that it therefore travels no further north or south Latitude 51.6 degrees. This orbit allows Russian vehicles to reach the station from Baikonur while covering most of the Earth’s inhabited surface, but it excludes the two polar regions from direct flight.

China’s Tiangong station and most US shuttles flew low-inclination routes. The Apollo crews viewed the high latitude regions and the polar regions while leaving or returning to Earth, but they did not orbit Earth in polar orbit. Fram 2’s first concern is with sustainable orbital engineering, and it is not the first distant human sighting of polar ice.

NASA once prepared for a polar shuttle launch

NASA and the US Air Force came close to this in the 1980s. Space Launch Complex 6 at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California has been converted to launch a shuttle carrying military and scientific payloads into a high-inclination or polar orbit.

One of the planned missions, STS-62-A, already had a crew identified. The project shows that the government’s polar expedition was not so far-fetched. It was an abandoned operational route before anyone flew it.

Polar flight abandons the thrust of the Earth’s rotation

A rocket launched eastward can borrow some of the Earth’s rotation speed. A vehicle heading into a 90-degree orbit receives almost none of this assistance. The polar path is valuable for weather, reconnaissance and Earth observation satellites because the rotating planet eventually passes underneath it. Most manned missions had little reason to pay performance and operating costs when their destinations were elsewhere.

Fram2 was different because the path itself was the destination.

Four first-time astronauts spent nearly four days there

Mission commander and financier Chun Wang flew with vehicle commander Jannik Mikkelsen, pilot Rabih Rogge, and mission specialist and medical officer Eric Phillips. All four were making their first spaceflights.

This mission was privately funded and managed, but did not originate outside of government spaceflight. The first was tight but true

Fram2 did not invent a polar orbit, install a new propulsion system, or create a permanent route. Robotic spacecraft have long since made this engineering mundane.
