Indian-born NASA astronaut Anil Menon prepares for a spacewalk on August 18 to repair the International Space Station’s antenna

Expedition 75 team aboard the International Space Station spent Thursday (August 13) conducting spacewalk verifications. Planned On August 18, even while other crew members conducted experiments based on virtual reality and artificial intelligence.

NASA’s Anil Menon and ESA’s Sophie Adeno will step outside the orbiting laboratory next Tuesday (August 18) to replace a high-speed antenna used to transmit data to Earth that has stopped working. The flight is expected to last approximately six and a half hours.

The duo will switch their suits to internal battery power at 8.35am EST, 6.05pm India time, before exiting through the Quest airlock.

They will make their way to the Z1 truss above the unit block, disconnect the faulty antenna and place it on an external storage platform, then collect a spare antenna from the same platform and screw it into place before securing the old unit.

Support from inside the station will come from NASA astronaut Jack Hathaway and Commander Jessica Meir, who will help the duo dress and later remove equipment while handling the Canadarm2 robotic arm. For part of the mission, Menon will be stationed on the jib closer, while Adinot remains attached to the truss.

The foundation has been running all week. Menon and Hathaway checked his suit on Thursday (August 13), filling tanks and cooled ventilators with water.

Meir and Adinot demonstrated the tools needed to attach the replacement antenna to the truss, and the crew spoke with flight controllers and robotics experts about safety steps and arm movements.

All seven crew members had previously trained on how to deal with loss of pressure, chemical leakage or fire using discs.

On the Russian side, Pyotr Dobrov and Anna Kikina took turns wearing virtual reality headsets for a study on how balance adapts to microgravity, while Kikina and Andrey Fedyev worked on artificial intelligence tools for future missions.
