The Egyptian Football Association announced on Wednesday the extension of the contract of men’s national team coach Hossam Hassan after a strong performance in the ongoing FIFA World Cup. The team led by Mohamed Salah, who played in the World Cup finals for only the fourth time and the first since 2018, finished in 16th place. They exited the tournament having shocked almost the entire football world, leading Argentina 2-0 in the semi-finals before the reigning champions exposed their significant gap in match experience and rallied with three goals in the space of 13 minutes to snatch victory and progress to the quarter-finals from the jaws of defeat.
The Federation said in a statement reported by Reuters: “Hani Abu Raida, President of the Federation, announced that the Federation’s Board of Directors approved the renewal of the contracts of the Egyptian national team’s technical director, Hossam Hassan, and the national team’s director, Ibrahim Hassan.”
The 59-year-old took over as coach of the Egypt national team in February 2024, and his first major achievement was reaching the semi-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. Hossam had also previously admitted to working with the team without a national contract in his name since February this year.
Egypt achieved its first World Cup victory under Hassan’s leadership with a 3-1 victory over New Zealand in Group G. In the round of 32, they also beat Australia on penalties, recording their first ever World Cup knockout win. According to local media, the new contract will last until 2030.
