But the festive atmosphere in Vancouver, where Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney was cheering on Les Rouges, was soured by Cooney’s serious injury in the 51st minute.
Qatari player Asim Madibo beat Kone with a clumsy challenge from behind, leaving the Italy-based midfielder writhing in pain and clutching his left leg.
The severity of the injury became apparent immediately as his teammates frantically called for help from Canadian medical staff on the sidelines.
Eventually, Kony was escorted off the pitch, waving to fans while inhaling from an oxygen tube.

Madibo, who initially received a yellow card for the challenge, was sent off after it was upgraded to red following a VAR review, the Qatari’s second sending off after Hammam Ahmed was booked in the first half.
With Qatar down to nine players, Canada took full advantage and scored three more goals.
Saliba, who replaced the injured Kone, scored a free kick to make it 4-0 in the 64th minute.

“Difficult to concentrate”

David is also the first CONCACAF player to score a hat-trick since 1930 and the first Canadian man to record a multi-goal game in a World Cup.
The embers of carnage during the match were reignited after full time when the two teams brawled on the halfway line and had to be kept apart by FIFA volunteers and team personnel.
It was a great match even before [Kone] “He got injured, but I think after his injury, it was hard to focus on the game, even finish the game… We just wanted the game to be over so we could all be together,” David said after the game.
“It will take a few days to realize that, but obviously we know that what we did today is historic for our country, our first World Cup win, and to do it in this way is truly amazing.”
