Yeast infection: Why can monsoons lead to vaginal health problems? Find out now!

Experts notice a spike in vaginal yeast infections during the monsoon. They say more women are coming to clinics complaining of itching, discomfort and unusual discharge during the rainy season.

Vaginal yeast infection is a common fungal problem caused by an overgrowth of a fungus called “Candida.” The main signs are severe itching, a burning feeling when you urinate or have sex, redness, and a thick, white discharge that looks a bit like “cheese.” The good news is that it is usually easy to treat with antifungal creams or single-dose pills.

Experts now point out that this infection becomes more common during the monsoon. They have noticed that more women are seeking medical help for vaginal itching, discomfort and discharge once the rains start.

However, health experts also caution that you shouldn’t assume all symptoms are a fungal infection and self-diagnose. High humidity in the air, excessive sweating, and wearing wet clothes for a long time can create ideal conditions for Candida to multiply, especially in women who are already susceptible to it.

Gynecologist Dr. Jana Srinivas confirms this trend. “Definitely more women are coming in with complaints of itching, discomfort and discharge during monsoon,” she says. She explains that high humidity, sweat, and wearing wet clothes for long hours create a situation that encourages the growth of “Candida” in susceptible women.

The main reason is the moisture in the air and the moisture that stays trapped close to your body. Think about it – wet underwear, leggings, jeans, tracksuits, or any clothing that gets wet in the rain. These garments trap heat and moisture in the vulva area, prevent air circulation, and can lead to hours of discomfort.

But it’s important to know that just getting wet doesn’t automatically cause a yeast infection. Candida is a fungus that normally lives in our bodies. Infection occurs only when things get out of balance, and fungus begins to grow due to these favorable conditions in and around the vagina.
