VVS Laxman is set to be appointed as BCCI Director of Cricket. What this means for Gautam Gambhir and Ajit Agarkar

Laxman Plumbingwho is currently the Chairman of the Center of Excellence (CoE) of the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India), is set to be appointed as the Director of Cricket by the Board. While Laxman will continue to handle his current responsibilities, sources told NDTV that his role will be more structured than before. Laxman, who has overseen India’s junior teams, player rehabilitation and pathways for both men and women’s cricketers, will also be responsible for future staff appointments.
Sources told NDTV that BCCI is set to extend Laxman’s contract, which will keep him at the Center of Excellence for another two years. The contract extension comes with a new designation, ‘Director of Cricket’, which did not exist before.
This change in role would connect all levels of Indian cricket, from senior coaches and selectors to the Center of Excellence and youth pathways, ensuring a unified approach to talent scouting and player development. For Laxman, this is a logical next step because he is already deeply involved in the Center of Excellence, working with talent at every stage of the project.
What does it mean to Gautam Gambhir and Ajit Agarkar
The timing of the development raises questions as the term of Ajit Agarkar, chairman of the National Selection Committee, is set to end in September. Agarkar’s role has been under the spotlight over the past few months, especially regarding the future of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli In the Indian ODI team.
Gambhir’s coaching future has also been a topic of discussion, especially in Test cricket, considering India’s poor position in the World Test Championship points table. The upcoming two-match series against Sri Lanka could determine what the future holds for Gambhir in red-ball cricket.
Sources also confirmed to NDTV that the revised role effectively places Laxman above Team India coach Gautam Gambhir and selection committee chairman Ajit Agarkar. However, there is no risk for Agarkar and Gambhir’s immediate future. It is also learned that both Agarkar and Gambhir are set to retain their current roles in the team until the 2027 World Cup.
