The hidden relationship between sleep and women’s memory

A restless night may seem like just a stressful inconvenience. But for some older women, recurring sleep problems can tell a deeper story about the brain.
A new study published in the August 2026 issue of the Journal of Alzheimer’s Prevention suggests that poor sleep may be linked to poor memory and early brain changes among older women who already carry a higher genetic risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease.
Researchers studied 69 women ages 65 and older. Participants reported on how well they slept and completed memory tests, while 63 of them also underwent brain scans. Among women with a higher genetic risk, those who reported poor sleep tended to perform worse when recalling visual information. Their scans also showed a greater accumulation of a harmful substance in damaged brain areas during the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease.
Interestingly, the same pattern was not observed among women with lower inherited risk. Lack of sleep was also not clearly linked to all types of memory tested.
The results do not mean that sleepless nights cause Alzheimer’s disease. The study was small, most of the participants were white, and the researchers relied in part on how the women described their sleep. Larger and more diverse studies are needed before firm conclusions can be drawn.
However, the research adds to a growing reason to treat sleep as a part of healthy aging rather than a luxury. Women often experience sleep changes as they age, especially around and after menopause, however persistent sleep problems can easily be considered normal.
