Shubman Gill points out a major concern over Galle’s Test against Sri Lanka: ‘We talk in team meetings’

India captain Shubman Gill highlighted the prominent role of spin in both India and Sri Lanka, while citing the extra bounce and wind effect as key differences ahead of the first Test of the two-match series at the Galle International Cricket Stadium. With the series starting on Saturday, Gill interacted with the media on the eve of the first Test and said that the conditions in Galle are similar to certain places in India, especially those with red soil pitches.

“A big similarity is that bowlers play a big role in both countries. Also, once the ball gets old, fast bowlers play an important role here as well. In terms of differences, it depends on where you play in India, as the soil is different. We have seen that there is a good amount of bounce on the wicket here, which is similar to playing on red-soil wickets in India. Playing in Mumbai is a little bit closer to playing here in Galle. If you are playing in North India, there is Less bounce and the ball comes a little slower. “Here, the players get a good bounce, and you see a lot of dismissals that are caught due to slips or by nearby players.”

Gill also pointed out that the open nature of the Galle Stadium encourages wind, something Indian teams face less in stadiums surrounded by stands.

“On open pitches, the wind sometimes plays a crucial role. As a batsman, we talk in team meetings about whether the wind is with us or against us when we want to face spinners. We have to see how we can use this condition to our advantage. This is one of the differences between playing in Sri Lanka and India. Most pitches in India are closed with stands, but on open pitches like this, the wind plays a big role,” he said.

Gill also stressed the importance of having adequate preparation time when switching from white-ball to Test cricket, saying a week to 10 days of preparation can help players adapt to unfamiliar conditions.

“If we have an opportunity and the schedule allows us at least a week or 10 days before the Test match starts, obviously that helps with preparation,” Gill said.

“Until last year, we had a very busy schedule in terms of traveling and playing in England, then playing the Asia Cup, then Test matches in India, going to Australia, then playing a Test match within four days of coming back from Australia. It’s never easy for players to be able to adapt quickly. Most of the players in this team need some time to be able to adapt to the conditions. It’s not as if a lot of players have many matches or a lot of experience under their belts, so the extra time in preparation definitely helps,” he added.

The first Test is an important milestone for Indian cricket as it will be the 600th Test for the country, making India only the third team after England and Australia and the first Asian team to reach the milestone. This Test match will also be the 50th Test match in Galle.

The series is also crucial to the 2025-27 World Test Championship campaigns for both sides. India currently occupies fifth place in the standings, while Sri Lanka occupies sixth place, which makes both teams need victories to maintain their hopes of reaching first and second places.
