NASA’s Perseverance rover has found unexpected traces of corundum containing chromium, a mineral associated with gemstones, in rocks in Jezero Crater on Mars. The discovery was made after the rover examined the rocks with its laser instrument. Scientists said the minerals may provide new clues about the geological history of Mars, including volcanic activity and the movement of water beneath its surface.
