Meet Soudalay Muthu: Daily Bet that offers free fitness coaching to young people

A 33-year-old daily wage construction worker from a village near Tirunelveli has proven that the gym can be about more than just fitness. Through Netaji Gym, Sudalai Muthu offers an affordable, trust-based workout space and free training to young people who cannot afford expensive gym memberships.

Unlike many commercial gyms, Netaji Gym is not focused on making profits. Members are asked to contribute an amount of Rs only. 200 per month for maintenance, but payment is not mandatory, making fitness accessible to young people from financially weaker families. Netaji Gym provides free fitness training to poor students and young athletes. Particular attention is given to young people preparing for government jobs, including recruitment into the police and armed forces, where physical fitness forms an important part of selection. The gym operates around the clock through an unusual open system. The key is kept on the outside, allowing the little ones to enter whenever they want. After exercising, users simply lock the gym and return the key to its usual location. (Photo: Special arrangement/S. Santhanakumar)

The unique trust-based system has worked very well. According to Sodalai Muthu, no sports equipment or other items have been lost so far. The initiative demonstrates how community responsibility and mutual trust can help maintain a shared facility. (Photo: Special arrangement/S. Santhanakumar)

Muthu wants Netaji Gym to offer more than just exercise equipment. His biggest goal is to encourage rural youth to follow a healthier lifestyle and stay away from harmful habits such as smoking and alcohol while focusing on their goals. (Photo: Special arrangement/S. Santhanakumar)

The gym has become a training ground for many aspiring athletes. Some of the youth who trained there reportedly won medals in state-level competitions, showing how access to basic fitness facilities can help rural talent develop and compete. (Photo: Special arrangement/S. Santhanakumar)

Muthu has arranged the equipment through donations and his own expenditure, while the district administration has also allocated space for his efforts. His story shows how one person’s passion, combined with community trust, can create opportunities for village youth. (Photo: Special arrangement/S. Santhanakumar)
