Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai Box Office: Varun Dhawan, Mrunal Thakur and Pooja Hegde starrer earns Rs 1 crore on 2nd Monday, nears theatrical end

Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai, directed by David Dhawan and starring Varun Dhawan, Mrunal Thakur, and Pooja Hegde, added Rs. 1 crore to the tally on its second Monday. The movie recorded a 45 per cent drop from the second Friday and 70 per cent from the last Monday.

The running cume of I am young so there is love now stands at Rs. 43.75 crore nett at the box office. Based on the current trends, the movie will surpass the Rs. 45 crore mark, possibly by the end of today (2nd Tuesday), and then it will march towards its second week’s closing, which is expected to be around Rs. 46-47 crore or so.

The Varun Dhawan starrer is following the trajectory of Tulsi Kumari of Sunny Sanskritiwhich netted Rs. 60 crore in its full run. Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai is looking to wind up its entire run around Rs. 50-55 crore nett, which is a dismal total for such a well-budgeted film like this.

The rom-com genre and mid-scale films are struggling in the post-pandemic times in general. One of the prime reasons is the erosion of the theatrical base by digital platforms. The current 8-week OTT window is directly undermining the theatrical business, conditioning audiences to simply wait for the streaming release. The makers need time to elongate the window to somewhere around 6 months and make the wait inconvenient for the audience. Otherwise, the genre is already suffering.
