A study found that eating more of these common foods may increase your risk of prostate cancer India Blooms



Ultra-processed foods A recent study revealed that UPFs account for approximately 60% of adult consumption and 70% of the energy consumed by children in the United States.

These industrially manufactured products — such as soft drinks, packaged cereals, snacks and processed meats — are made with refined fats, oils, sugars, starches, salts and other additives that can enhance flavor, texture and shelf life while reducing nutritional value.

Growing evidence links high consumption of UPFs to a range of health problems. Research has identified several potential biological pathways through which UPFs may contribute to cancer, reads the Florida Atlantic University website.

These include metabolic disturbances, inflammation, oxidative stress, and changes in the gut microbiome.

However, there is little data on whether men who consume large amounts of UPFs have a greater risk of developing prostate cancer.

Now, new research from Florida Atlantic University’s Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine provides evidence that men who consume higher amounts of UPFs have an increased risk of prostate cancer. In the United States, prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer and the second leading cause of cancer death among men after lung cancer.


The study, published in the American Journal of Medicine, provides analyzes from large, nationally representative data of 17,024 US men aged 18 and older who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2003 through 2023. The researchers used two 24-hour dietary recalls to calculate the percentage of daily calories participants consumed from UPFs. Using the widely validated and used NOVA classification system, they divided participants into four groups, ranging from less than about 20% of calories from UPFs to more than 44%.

Men in the three groups who consumed the most UPFs were 29% more likely to develop prostate cancer, while those in the two groups who consumed the most UPFs had a 30% greater risk, compared to those in the group who consumed the least. After adjustments for age, race, ethnicity, smoking, and poverty status, the increased risks remained significant, ranging from 24% to 31%. Men who took the highest amount of UPF alone had a 34% higher risk, although the result did not reach statistical significance, which may reflect the smaller number of prostate cancer cases in that group.

“Among adult men in this nationally representative population in the United States, those who consumed higher amounts of UPFs had a significantly higher risk of developing prostate cancer,” said Charles H. Henkins, MD, FACPM, FACC, is lead author and the Sir Richard Dole I Professor of Medicine and Preventive Medicine in the Department of Medicine and Division of Population Health at the University of Florida College of Medicine. “These findings add to the emerging evidence that UPFs have significant adverse health effects and underscore the need for large-scale observational studies and randomized trials to adequately test the hypothesis.”


Previous studies have shown that people who consume higher amounts of UPFs are at greater risk of overweight and obesity, metabolic disease, signs of inflammation, cardiovascular disease, especially heart attacks and strokes, as well as premature death.

This original research adds to the armament of a greater battle in which the food industry’s priorities are mismatched with the needs of the American public. The authors argue that when the dangers of tobacco began to emerge during the middle of the previous century, decades passed before the preponderance of evidence and the efforts of forward-thinking health officials led to policy changes to discourage cigarette use. The authors believe that this is likely a similar pathway for UPFs.


“Reducing the consumption of UPFs represents a complex public health challenge, especially given how widespread and accessible these products are,” said co-author Timothy De Vere Day, Ph.D., professor and chair of the Department of Population Health at Florida Atlantic University. “Health care providers must recognize that many patients face barriers to accessing and providing healthy food options. Addressing these challenges will require efforts that go beyond individual choices to support increased access to nutritious, minimally processed foods.”

Prostate cancer is a major health concern in the United States and throughout the world. The American Cancer Society estimates that more than 333,000 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in the United States in 2026, with more than 36,000 people expected to die from the disease. According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer, nearly 1.5 million men worldwide will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2022, and nearly 400,000 will die from the disease.

“All healthcare professionals should encourage patients to adopt healthy lifestyle practices and evidence-based treatments, while also helping them reduce their consumption of ultra-processed foods,” Henkins said. “Patients and health care providers should consider this finding as part of broader efforts to promote healthy food choices.”
