To get a sense of the hiring picture for these pros, Spiceworks spoke with Matthew Baden, managing director, tech, at recruiting firm The Search Experience; Joel Deutsch, CEO and founder at staffing firm F5 Hiring Solutions; Aler Rab, deputy CEO at Cloudzy; and Jayakumar Ramalingam, independent staff software engineer and cloud architect.
What a cloud network specialist job entails
As a cloud network specialist, you will design and operate the networking layer inside cloud environments. That means virtual private clouds, subnets, routing, load balancers, VPNs, firewall rules, and DNS across AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud.
When a company moves workloads to the cloud, someone has to make sure traffic reaches the right place securely and quickly. They also handle hybrid setups where part of the infrastructure is still on premise.
“A cloud network specialist ensures that applications, users and services can communicate securely and reliably across cloud and hybrid environments,” explains Jayakumar Ramalingaman independent software engineer and cloud architect. This work includes routing, DNS, load balancing, private connectivity, firewalls, identity controls, infrastructure as code, and network observability.
The top specialists grasp the whole request path instead of viewing each part as a separate configuration.
Demand for the role of a cloud network specialist
This is currently one of the strongest areas in networking. You’ll find that demand for your skills is high because almost every company is dealing with hybrid or multi-cloud connectivity challenges. That picture is likely to remain for the next several years as AI workloads, data platforms, and zero-trust architectures increase complexity.

The report titled Top Careers in Cloud Computing for 2026 from the School of Information Studies at Syracuse University confirms the high demand for leading job roles in networking and cloud computing.
The major change is in the hiring sources for companies. Since the local talent pool for this skill is limited and costly in many job markets, an increasing number of U.S. companies are opting to hire full-time remote engineers rather than battling for the same small group of local candidates.
You’ll be in especially high demand if you can trace issues across different layers of the infrastructure, understand whether a problem is originating from the network, the operating system, or the application, and automate work that would otherwise need to be handled manually. So, your role would not just be about keeping connectivity working. It’s about understanding how the whole environment behaves and making sure the infrastructure remains reliable, secure, and scalable as it evolves.
Preferred background experience
There is no single background route into the role. You can be a strong candidate coming from network engineering, systems administration, SREplatform engineering, or a backend role that includes production ownership and on-call work. What matters more is whether you have diagnosed failures in real systems where their decisions had operational consequences.
Traditional network engineers do typically demonstrate experience with cloud platforms, identity, and infrastructure as code. You should also understand routing, DNS, TLS, and the network behavior beneath application frameworks. You’ll be an especially strong candidate if you can work across both sides of that boundary.
When it comes to the technical skills you should possess or can learn, recruiters and hiring managers are on the lookout for expertise in AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud networking, along with Terraform, Kubernetes, and Docker. They also value knowledge in load balancing, DNS, VPN and firewall setup, Linux, Ansible, and strong scripting abilities in Python. Nowadays, identity and access management has become a fundamental skill that employers expect, rather than just a supplementary one.
On the business side, the most important skill is understanding trade-offs. A technically sophisticated solution isn’t necessarily a good solution if it is too complex, too expensive, too fragile, or difficult for the rest of the team to maintain.
Strong engineers understand that the best technical decision is usually the one that balances performance, reliability, cost, and operational simplicity. A technically correct design can still be wrong if it increases recovery time, creates unnecessary operational complexity, or costs more than the risk it addresses.
Personality traits that will help
Can you keep your cool when things get tense, especially since network issues tend to pop up at the worst moments? Are you good at communicating clearly, given that this role connects developers, security, and operations? And are you eager to dig into the root causes of problems, since the best professionals aren’t just happy with a quick restart that only hides the symptoms.
These traits are important because employers look for candidates that stay curious, think systematically, and don’t panic when the answer isn’t obvious. What’s crucial is how a person approaches a new problem: can they dissect it, challenge their assumptions, figure out what info is lacking, and distinguish the actual cause from just the symptoms?
A mathematical or systems-oriented way of thinking often helps, because these people naturally look for dependencies, constraints, and patterns rather than treating every issue as a standalone event. Technical knowledge is important, but over time, the way someone thinks is usually a better predictor of how far they can grow.
You should also be aware of some sure-fire deal breakers for employers. One warning sign is jumping directly to configuration changes without first defining the failure or examining the evidence. Another is knowing one cloud vendor’s terminology but being unable to explain the networking principles underneath it. Memorized certification answers don’t demonstrate production judgment.
Certifications worth acquiring
There is some debate over the value of obtaining technology certifications. Some employers view them as a structured way to learn fundamentals, particularly for someone early in their career. But many firms don’t treat them as strong evidence by themselves.
Still, there are several certifications that certainly can’t hurt. They include AWS Advanced Networking Specialty, Azure Network Engineer Associate, and Google Professional Cloud Network Engineer. Remember, though: certifications help candidates get through screening, but what gets someone hired is being able to walk through a system they built and explain why they made each decision.
According to Rab,use your own mind first. Become exceptionally strong on the fundamentals, and then use AI to multiply what you can do.
Strategic AI use for your job search
If you are tempted to use artificial intelligence in your job search efforts, AI may be able to explain aspects of the job. But you need to understand what the system is doing, why something failed, and whether the suggested solution actually makes sense.
Once that foundation is strong, AI becomes much more useful. Engineers might wish to automate the repeatable parts of how they investigate incidents, monitor systems, document work, and operate infrastructure. In a sense, you should be trying to clone the repeatable parts of yourself into software so that your attention can move to problems that require more judgment.
Other steps you should take:
- Learn the business, not just the tools. Understand why uptime and latency matter in dollars to your company. The engineers who connect a technical decision to a business outcome are the ones who move up.
- Get real hands-on experience with hybrid and multi-cloud setups, not just lab environments. Learn to automate everything you can, and always design with security and cost in mind. Document your designs well — future you (and the team) will thank you.
- Build systems, break them deliberately, and document how you repaired them. Learn Linux networking and DNS before memorizing a cloud console. Use infrastructure as code, study incident reports, and practice explaining technical failures in business terms.
How to succeed in the job
This is one of the strongest foundation roles in IT right now. IT pros move from here into cloud architecture, platform engineering, or infrastructure leadership. Because the role touches security, cost and reliability at the same time, it builds the breadth that senior roles require.
In this position, you’ll gain a valuable mix of knowledge in distributed systems, security awareness, and operational decision-making.
