Williams driver Alex Albon will start the Italian Grand Prix from the back of the grid after being hit with a 20-place penalty due to power unit changes.
AlbonThe Mercedes was equipped with a fifth internal combustion engine (ICE) and a fourth control electronics unit (PU-CE) at Monza, resulting in two 10-place penalties.
According to Regulationsthe first time the allocation of any power unit element is exceeded, a grid penalty of 10 cores will be applied, and the second time this happens (and so on) it causes the grid to be downgraded by five cores – all penalties in the same event are applied in a cumulative manner.
If a driver suffers a penalty of more than 15 places on the grid, he will be required to start the race at the back of the field regardless.
Albon joins Mercedes‘ Kimi Antonelli In implementing a grid penalty this weekend, the Italian took 5th in ICE, 4th in PU-CE, and 4th in Energy Store (ES), resulting in a virtual drop of 30 places.
Provided no further penalties are applied before Sunday’s race, this means Albon and Antonelli will share the back row of the grid.
