This Actor Lost 3 Roles In One Day, Was Replaced Overnight, Went On To Earn 4 National Awards

Manoj Bajpayee is undoubtedly one of the most talented and versatile actors in Bollywood. He has experienced his share of highs and lows in the film industry, and his journey has been truly commendable. In a recent conversation with Shekhar Suman, Manoj Bajpayee recalled that even after Bandit Queen, he struggled to find work in the industry.

Manoj Bajpayee recalled a deeply painful phase early in his career when he lost three projects in a single day—an experience that tested both his confidence and resilience. He shared that he was once working on multiple projects simultaneously. One was a lead role in a television serial, another was a lead part in a corporate film, and the third was an upcoming serial where he was set to play the second lead.

He went to the shoot of the first project as usual, but things quickly took an unexpected turn. After the first take, the assistant director and director stepped away into a room. Soon after, the AD called him aside and asked him to change out of his costume. He was told that something “was not working” and that he would be informed if anything changed.

As he left the set, he saw all his co-actors outside. The moment felt humiliating and devastating for him, though he chose not to break down emotionally in front of anyone. “As I was leaving, all my co-actors were outside. It was devastating. I felt insulted. But I didn’t cry,” he recalled.

Still shaken, he suddenly decided to visit the shoot of the corporate film he had been working on. When he reached there, he was informed that he had been replaced. Left stunned, he stepped out and called the team of his third project. When he asked about the shoot schedule, the assistant director casually informed him that the director was unavailable. Moments later, he learned that he had been replaced from that project as well.

In a single day, all three roles slipped out of his hands without warning or explanation. Despite these early hardships, Manoj Bajpayee went on to build an acclaimed career, ultimately becoming one of Indian cinema’s most respected actors. His journey stands today as a remarkable rise from rejection to recognition, with multiple National Awards to his name.

He won the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor award in 1999 for Satya, followed by a Special Jury Award (Feature Film) in 2004 for Pinjar. Later, he was awarded the Best Actor award in 2021 for Bhosle, and most recently received a Special Mention in 2024 for Gulmohar.
