The fifth is common to most sixes In the CPL match, but the Tridents’ score of 217 was not enough to keep the Patriots at the bottom of the table any longer.
The dramatic match came with it
Share of controversy. Charles was on 26 in the fourth over when he pulled a full toss off Ramon Simmonds and Shirvan Rutherford completed a sharp catch while diving forward at deep square leg. Charles had been out but the third umpire wanted to check there was no waist-high ball and the Tridents camp were not happy when the big screen flashed ‘Not out’. Things got worse for the Tridents when Charles hit a free hit for six – his fourth of the innings.
Charles did the heavy lifting in the opening stand with Kyle Mayers, racing to a 29-ball fifty when he chased down Mujeeb Ur Rahman before the halfway mark of the innings. Myers and Charles hit three hits between them in the 10th inning on Judakish Moti, which lasted 20 innings, leaving them 110th unbeaten, needing 108 more.
The run was broken when Rutherford reached out to catch Charles again and although he could not hold on, the deflection hit the stumps with Mayers outside the crease at the non-striker’s end.
The Tridents saw an opportunity and conceded just 22 points in three overs after that point, with Charles holed out for 78 points from Mujeeb in that period. But Shanaka and Jason Holder continued their strong hitting to bring the equation down to 40 from 18 before both fell back in the 18th over to
Daniel Sams.
The Tridents may have thought they were in front as the Patriots now needed 33 off 14, but Hasaranga fired his first ball for a six, which turned out to be a no-ball, and followed it up with a four to make the equation 22 off 12. Fletcher provided the finishing touches with a no-look six and a successive six, as Hasaranga found two smart boundaries behind point between them, and the Patriots were at home with five balls to spare.
Once Holder had Brandon King slide from first to third with his second ball after the Tridents were asked to bat,
Zachary Carter De Kock started the six-hitting in a century stand of his own. They smashed an 18-run lead from the sixth over in the Powerplay off 53 runs before Carter hit three sixes in the space of four balls and de Kock reached his half-century off 31 balls.
Hasaranga got the Patriots’ lead with his trademark foul to remove Carter for 57 despite a flow of runs from the other end. De Kock punished
Naseem Shah And Jeremiah Lewis all over the park and his six and successive fours off Holder in the 18th over took him to his second CPL hundred.
Naseem made up for the leaked runs through the wickets of De Kock and Rutherford in the next over before a Chris Green brace gave the Tridents over 200 runs. It wasn’t enough, and although their path to the playoffs is unlikely at this stage, the Tridents are not out of the race yet.
