Vishal Chaturvedi’s devotional drama Hanuman Ansh has emerged as one of the biggest box office success of the year so far. Based on the life and teachings of spiritual leader Neem Karoli Baba, popularly known as Maharaj Ji, the film opened to modest numbers but has witnessed a remarkable turnaround, powered largely by strong word of mouth. With the film becoming a topic of discussion, more people are rushing to theatres to watch it. However, do you know who is the actor who plays Neem Karoli Baba in Hanuman Ansh? Who Is Shobinaw Satyaa?
Shobinaw Satyaa is an actor and filmmaker who made his acting debut with Hanuman Ansh. Before stepping in front of the camera, he had been working behind it as an assistant director. Hailing from Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, Shobhinaw is an alumnus of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune. His earlier work includes contributions to television and streaming projects such as CID, Ragini MMS Returns, Happily Ever After and Mahapaur.
Interestingly, Satyaa’s casting for Hanuman Ansh came unexpectedly. As reported by NDTV, the actor who was initially finalised to play the role of Maharaj Ji fell ill. With production underway, director Vishal Chaturvedi needed someone who could step into the demanding part.
Satyaa was asked to audition. What followed was an intensive five-hour audition, after which Chaturvedi decided that he was the right person to portray Neem Karoli Baba.
Who Was Neem Karoli Baba?
Neem Karoli Baba was a Hindu spiritual teacher and a devoted follower of Lord Hanuman. His birth name is generally given as Lakshman Narayan Sharmaand he was born around 1900 in Akbarpur village in present-day Uttar Pradesh. He died on September 11, 1973, in Vrindavan.
Many of Baba’s stories are surrounded by accounts of miracles and extraordinary incidents, many of which were passed down by his devotees. Because these accounts are based largely on devotees’ recollections, they are best understood as part of the spiritual tradition surrounding him rather than as independently verified historical facts.
Hanuman Ansh Box Office: From Rs 10 Lakh Opening To Rs 50 Crore Now
Hanuman Ansh started slow at the box office after its release. The film reportedly opened with around Rs 10 lakh on its first day. However, instead of fading after a weak opening, the film gradually picked up through positive word of mouth.
Made on a reported budget of around Rs 2 crore, the film crossed the Rs 40 crore mark in India within 24 days and has subsequently gone past Rs 50 crore, making it one of the year’s most unexpected sleeper hits.
Several celebrities including Kangana Ranaut and Madhur Bhandarkar have also praised the film.
