Now, CA chief executive Todd Greenberg has confirmed that Gardner’s future as vice-captain was discussed by board officials, but it was ultimately decided that the 29-year-old would remain part of the leadership group.
“The matter was discussed yesterday at board level. The board requested an update on it, which we provided, and the result of that is that the board is very supportive of Ash in the role as she has been appointed to the position of deputy leader,” [there’s] “High, high regards for Ash,” Greenberg told reporters in Darwin.
Greenberg also revealed that California knew about the relationship between Gardner and Faul before it became public. He added that Gardner’s position prompted CA to update its Respect at Work policy regarding relationship players in leadership roles.
He added: “We have a respect policy at work, which we have now put some additional measures in place. Because we want to ascertain the perception or real conflict in selections, even though the vice-captain has no say in the selections in the team, the leadership role and influence that person may have to put guardrails around how the policy works. Beyond that, we have taken it as a personal matter.”
Greenberg insisted that while Gardner, as vice-captain, had no say in selection matters, she would have to refrain from having any conversations with player or selectors regarding Foale’s selection in the starting XI or squad, or any other factor that could give rise to a potential conflict of interest.
“That’s right,” Greenberg said. “And we think that’s important. Even if there’s no conflict, even if there’s a noticeable level of conflict, not just from the outside, but from other teammates or from employees.
“We’re in a tough spot here because, like all sports, we’re all learning a little bit about how these high-performance environments work. So we want to make sure our policies are in line with the facts, and I think that’s exactly what we’ve done. The board has been very supportive of Ash and has been since the beginning.”
