The footage adds another chapter to one of the most controversial matches of the tournament. Argentina recovered from a 2-0 deficit to score three goals in the last 13 minutes and book their place in the quarter-finals, but refereeing decisions continued to dominate the post-match events.

What happened?

Egypt thought they had doubled their lead in the 58th minute when Mostafa Zico finished off a brilliant counter-attack after excellent work from Mohamed Salah. However, the VAR intervened and disallowed the goal due to a foul by Marwan Attia on Lisandro Martinez about 100 yards from Argentina’s goal during the build-up.

While the decision angered Egypt, what angered them even more was the perceived inconsistency in the use of VAR. Moments before Enzo Fernandez scored the winning goal for Argentina, Egypt called for a penalty kick after Salah fell inside the penalty area after a slight contact with his shoe, but the incident was not reviewed.

After the match, Zico expressed his frustration while speaking to TSN through a translator.

“It wasn’t fair from the referee. It wasn’t really fair. That was very clear. He wasted all our efforts with his decisions. We were 2-0 up and couldn’t do anything. It’s all in God’s hands.”

“We are very sorry. We wanted to make you all happy. It was out of the question. It was the referee. Congratulations to Argentina on winning the second cup.”

Egypt’s protests did not end there. On Wednesday, the Egyptian Football Association filed a formal complaint with FIFA against referee François Letexier and his refereeing team, and is said to be seeking explanations for the controversial decisions, calling for an investigation into the match, and requesting that the French referee be excluded from the remainder of the World Cup.
