Persistent headaches lead to the diagnosis of a rare tumor in the skull; Timely treatment ensures successful recovery at Mira Road, Wockhardt Hospitals

The importance of recognizing persistent symptoms and seeking timely medical care has been highlighted by Wockhardt Hospitals Mira Road with a notable case where a seemingly routine headache led to the diagnosis of a rare cranial tumour.

A 37-year-old man visited the outpatient department at Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road, complaining of a persistent headache on the left side of his head. The pain has not responded to routine over-the-counter medications. Despite the discomfort, he continued his daily activities without neurological deficits, weakness, vision problems, or functional limitations.

Advanced imaging reveals an unusual lesion

Due to the persistent nature of headaches, specialists recommend a detailed diagnostic evaluation. The medical team performed advanced imaging scans, including an MRI, CT scan and positron emission tomography, which revealed a small lesion on the left side of the skull.

Scans showed local erosion of the skull bone along with abnormal metabolic activity, prompting doctors to investigate further and determine the exact nature of the lesion.

A multidisciplinary team develops a treatment plan

The case was subsequently reviewed by a multidisciplinary team including neurologists, neurosurgeons, oncologists, radiologists and pathologists at Wockhardt Mira Road Hospitals. After conducting comprehensive clinical evaluations and laboratory tests, the team recommended surgical removal of the tumor.

According to the hospital’s press release, the collaborative approach enabled specialists from multiple specialties to accurately assess the condition and develop an effective treatment strategy.

Precision-guided surgery allows safe removal of tumors

The neurosurgical team used advanced CT-based neuronavigation technology to precisely locate the lesion before and during surgery. The technology works like a GPS-guided system for the brain and skull, and has allowed surgeons to precisely target and remove the tumor, which is no larger than a marble.

As a result, the team succeeded in removing the tumor while preserving surrounding healthy tissue and reducing surgical risks.

Expert perspective on early diagnosis

Commenting on the case, Dr. Nimesh Jain, Consultant Neurosurgeon, Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road, said:

“Headaches are among the most common neurological complaints and are often benign. However, persistent headaches should never be ignored, especially those that do not respond to conventional treatment or differ from the individual’s usual pattern. In this case, timely evaluation enabled us to identify a rare tumor at an early stage, allowing for successful treatment. Advanced imaging, precise targeted surgery and multidisciplinary collaboration have played a crucial role in achieving excellent clinical outcomes. Early diagnosis remains one of the most important factors in improving outcomes for patients with neurological conditions.”

Successful recovery and rare diagnosis have been confirmed

The operation was completed successfully, and the patient is recovering well. Doctors discharged him from the hospital within three days of surgery, and he resumed his normal activities shortly thereafter.

Subsequent histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH), a rare disorder characterized by abnormal proliferation of Langerhans cells. In adults, the incidence of this condition is estimated at 1 to 2 cases per million people per year. The patient continues to undergo regular follow-up with the oncology team for ongoing monitoring and management.

Specialists encourage timely medical evaluation

Specialists at Wockhardt Mira Road Hospitals urge individuals to seek medical care if they are experiencing persistent headaches, unexplained neurological symptoms, seizures, vision changes, balance disturbances, or any unusual symptoms that persist despite routine treatment.

A reminder of the importance of early intervention

This case is an important reminder that seemingly minor symptoms can sometimes indicate serious medical conditions. Early diagnosis, timely intervention, advanced surgical expertise and coordinated multidisciplinary care can significantly improve treatment outcomes and enhance patients’ quality of life.
