Deep Sea Secrets: What is a whale fall?

Imagine diving approximately 7 kilometers below the surface of the ocean and finding not one or two whale skeletons, but rather hundreds of them sprawled across the sea floor. And that’s exactly what scientists have discovered in the Indian Ocean, the world’s largest known whale graveyard.
The extraordinary discovery published in the magazine natureIt includes nearly 500 whale skeletons scattered along a 1,200-kilometre-long corridor on the ocean floor in Western Australia. Some of the fossils are estimated to be 5.3 million years old, making it the deepest and oldest whale graveyard ever discovered.
A discovery that scientists never expected
The whale graveyard was found during a series of deep-sea expeditions by the Chinese submersible Fenduzi in 2023. The researchers conducted 32 dives in the Diamantina Rift zone, reaching depths of up to 7,000 metres. What they found left them astonished.
“We were amazed,” said lead author Xiao Tongping of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Agence France-Presse.
“It was completely unexpected: the scale of distribution, depth and age range were far beyond anything we had imagined.”
The team cataloged 485 whale fossils, most of which belong to different species of beaked whales. They also identified a previously unknown and now extinct species of whale among the remains.
What is whale fall?
When a whale dies, its body sometimes sinks to the bottom of the sea in an event known as a “whale fall.” In the deep ocean, where food is scarce, a whale carcass becomes a tremendous source of nutrition. Over time, entire ecosystems can evolve around a single skeleton.
The newly discovered tomb shows this process on an unprecedented scale. From inside the submarine, researchers observed thriving communities of… Deep sea creatures that live on it and around bones, including jellyfish, brittle stars, bone-boring worms, and bivalves.

It is believed that many of the animals are new to science.
Why are so many whales found here?
Scientists believe the area may have served as a natural collection point for whale carcasses.
The area is known to be an important feeding ground for whales. In addition, the presence of a V-shaped trench on the sea floor may direct sunken bodies to the same area over thousands and even millions of years.
Based on fossil density, researchers estimate there may be more than 10 million whale carcasses spread across the wider Diamantina region.

Hidden drive for life in the deep sea
Beyond the sheer scale of this discovery, scientists say the tomb offers a rare glimpse into how life survives in some of the most extreme environments on Earth.
The soft tissue and fat found in whale carcasses represent a huge storehouse of carbon and nutrients. According to the researchers, the remains found in the area may represent approximately 6.7 million tons of sequestered carbon.
The study also found that some of the animals living around whale falls resemble species found near hydrothermal vents and cold seeps, suggesting that whale carcasses may help connect isolated deep-sea ecosystems.
Researchers believe underwater ‘whale cities’ could serve as an evolutionary stepping stone, helping species spread across the deep ocean.

While this is the largest whale graveyard yet discovered, scientists suspect that similar hidden bone fields may still be waiting to be found elsewhere in the world’s oceans.
