An ODI between Canada and the Netherlands was abandoned due to a dangerous stadium in Toronto

The match was abandoned after just 4.1 overs in the Netherlands’ innings after they elected to bat. They were 15 for 1, with batsman Max O’Dowd dismissed for a duck in the second over. The pitch bounce was uneven and batters were hit several times during the short passage of play.
“This pitch was below the standard expected for this level of cricket,” match referee Phil Thompson said of the surface for the USA-Netherlands match. “Both captains expressed their disappointment at what happened, and the match officials rated it as ‘very poor’. The inconsistent rebounding created difficult and potentially unsafe playing conditions. Taking all factors into account, I believe the pitch deserves an ‘unsatisfactory’ rating.”
According to the ICC’s pitch and pitch monitoring process, pitches receiving an ‘unsatisfactory’ rating will be awarded one demerit point, while an ‘inadequate’ pitch rating will result in three demerit points for the pitch. Demerit points remain active for a rolling period of five years, and the accumulation of six demerit points will result in a venue being suspended from hosting international matches for 12 months (12 demerit points will result in a 24-month ban).
