Amazon Electric Pickup, SUV Patented In India

Since Jeff Bezos-backed Slate Auto is currently focused on the US market, launch in other global markets could take a few years
An American EV startup, Slate Auto was launched in 2022. Its first product, the Slate Truck, was revealed in April 2025. The startup has Amazon founder Jeff Bezos as one of its leading investors. Slate Auto is gearing up to unveil its electric pickup truck in production-ready form on June 24 in the USA. Interestingly, Slate Auto has patented its electric pickup and SUV in India as well.

In ICE vehiclespowertrain choices are among the key purchase considerations. This has changed dramatically with electric vehiclesas the focus shifts on factors like range and features. Slate Auto is thinking along similar lines, focusing on DIY solutions and a wide range of customization options. This approach can help the brand to differentiate itself from rival electric cars in the mainstream segment.
The patents in India might suggest that the company is trying to protect their IPs (intellectual Properties) over here and it is unclear whether the Amazon-backed Slate Auto will make a debut in India. In the USA, Slate Auto is offering a high level of customization to its customers.
For example, all units will have the same gray colour at the time of production. Buyers will have the option to continue using the same colour or choose from 54 basic wraps. Buyers can also choose from 45-50 options with metallic finishes and other designs. Instead of applying the wrap at the factory, Slate Auto is offering these as a DIY project for buyers. Customers who may find that task challenging can hire an expert to do the wrap.

Body customizations, pricing
In addition to the wraps, Slate Auto will also offer a wide range of accessories. These can be installed by the owner or a technician could be hired for the job. Slate has ensured that the installation of accessories is easy. When done as a DIY project, owners can get help from the official app. It provides detailed instructions on how to install the various accessories in the correct way.
Another of Slate Auto’s USPs will be its competitive pricing. The brand is offering a bare-bones electric pickup, which could be among the most accessible in the US market. Recent reports point to a source code leak, with the pickup’s starting price listed at $24,950 (Rs 23.72 lakh). However, it is not certain if such claims are true. The official price is expected to be revealed on 24th June.
With their no-frills approach, base variants of Slate Auto’s electric pickup could easily achieve the speculative $24,950 price point. The pickup uses plastic body panels instead of sheet metal, which also helps reduce production cost. For customers who want to upgrade, a wide range of accessories are on offer. Pre orders will begin from 24th June and deliveries are expected to commence by the end of this year.

India launch prospects
While Slate Auto has filed design patents in India, this is more likely a standard process to secure its intellectual property (IP). It does not confirm an immediate launch in India. Slate Auto will focus first on the US market, before expanding to other locations. India has significant potential in the EV space, and Slate Auto could consider entering this market sometime in the future.
